George Glenn Jones (September 12, 1931 – April 26, 2013) was an American musician, singer and songwriter. He achieved international fame for his long list of hit records, including his best known song “He Stopped Loving Her Today”, as well as his distinctive voice and phrasing. For the last twenty years of his life, Jones was frequently referred to as the greatest living country singer. George Jones died today. When he was a young man, famous for his hard lifestyle of drink and drugs and for outbursts of anger, nobody would have expected him ever to be an old man. But his fourth wife Nancy, with whom he just celebrated his thirtieth wedding anniversary, helped him settle into a more sustainable life and live to the respectable age of 81.
Most of us are able to keep our failures more or less private. We make mistakes, but the selves we present to the world are our better selves. Things didn’t work out that way for George Jones. Any pleasure he took from the adulation of his many fans was surely tempered by the fact that those fans also knew of his personal failings. Everybody knew the story of the time he piloted a riding lawnmower to the liquor store because his wife had taken away his car keys [ed. that liquor store is one block from the Rabbit Room office, by the way]. They knew about the trashed motel rooms, the fistfights, the holes he shot in the floor of his tour bus. An anecdote is just a sad story told for laughs; George Jones was the subject of more than his share of anecdotes.

The funeral for country singer George Jones, who died Friday morning at age 81, will take place Thursday at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, and will be open to the public.
“George would have wanted his fans and friends everywhere to be able to come and pay their respects along with his family,” publicist Kirt Webster said Sunday in a media release.
In the same release, Jones’ widow, Nancy, said, “Thanks to George’s friends, fans, and loved ones for the outpouring of love at this terrible time. I love you all.”
Thursday’s service will begin at 10 a.m. Central time. A private visitation for family, friends and fellow performers will take place Wednesday evening. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Grand Ole Opry Trust Fund.

It’s been a bad week for music. George Jones, the greatest of the old-school country singers, has died at the age of 81.
He was originally from Saratoga in deep East Texas and even after he became famous he was a familiar sight in places like Beaumont. When we worked for a newspaper in Southeast Texas it was almost a routine assignment for someone to go out and cover a George Jones performance – he pretty much played the same standard set during that period (late 1970s-early 1980s) but it was always big news when ol’ Possum came to town.
We also talked a lot to his wife Nancy, who was a key figure in getting George off the sauce in the 1980s. They opened a Branson-style music venue, Jones Country Park, in 1983, where you could camp (mostly in RVs) and walk over to see people perform at an amphitheater. George played some shows there, and they were great.
