In high summer (June to August), it’s sapphire-blue and almost balmy. In winter (October to April), it’s strewn with lumps of blueish ice and swept by a watery sun and chilling winds. But, for us, this is really what Lake Baikal is about — a piece of raw Siberia, a Russia that’s far removed from the metropolises of Moscow and St Petersburg that most visitors gravitate toward. Completely ringed by mountain ranges, its shores are dense with Trans-Baikal conifer, taiga (boreal) and pine forest, save for a few small towns. Beyond all this lies utter wilderness.
Tour Lake Baikal with any guide, and you’ll find that the statistics come thick and fast: at 1,637 m (5,370 ft) it’s the world’s deepest lake, containing a fifth of the world’s fresh water. It shelters over 2,000 animal and plant species, most of which only inhabit the lake and its surrounds. It’s larger than Belgium and has water of such crystal clarity that visibility extends to a depth of 40 m (131 ft).

Baikal is a lake of tectonic origin located in the southern part of Eastern Siberia, the deepest lake in the world (1,642 meters) and the largest natural reservoir of fresh water (19%).
It is situated in the center of Asia, on the border of the Irkutsk region and the Republic of Buryatia. The lake stretches from the southwest to the northeast for 620 km in the form of a giant crescent. The width of the lake is in the range of 24 to 79 km.

Lake Baikal, located in Russia’s Southern Siberia, is a lot of things: the largest freshwater lake by volume, the deepest, and the clearest in the world. Lake Baikal is a Russian word that means Nature Lake. Lake Baikal is situated in the southern part of Siberia, Russia. It is situated between Buryat Republic and Irkutsk Oblast.
It was formed as a result of rift valley. It is the largest fresh water lake in the entire universe consisting about 20% of world’s unfrozen fresh water. It is the deepest lake in the world with a depth of 1,642m or 5387ft.It is one the clearest lake and the oldest lake-about 25million years old. It is known as the “Older Sister of Sister Lakes”.
Lake Baikal has a surface area of about 31,722 square kilometers or 12,248 square miles. It is home to about 1,700 plants and animals of which 2/3 of them do not exist anywhere else in the world. Buryat tribe lives along the eastern parts and rear goats, camels, sheep and cattle. Average temperature is -2degrees with minimum of -19degree. Highest temperatures occur during summer at around 14 degrees.
