#7   Patti Smith Biography,More info:biography

Who Is Patti Smith?Patti Smith is a singer, writer and artist who became a highly influential figure in the New York City punk rock scene. After working on a factory assembly line, she began performing spoken word and later formed the Patti Smith Group (1974-79). Her most famous album is Horses. Her relationship with Fred “Sonic” Smith caused a hiatus in her singing career, but she returned to music after his untimely death and later earned acclaim for a series of autobiographical books.

Early LifeSinger, songwriter and poet Patricia Lee Smith was born on December 30, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the eldest of four children born to Beverly Smith, a jazz singer turned waitress, and Grant Smith, a machinist at a Honeywell plant. After spending the first four years of her life on the south side of Chicago, Smith’s family moved to Philadelphia in 1950 and then to Woodbury, New Jersey, in 1956, when she was 9 years old.

“Words and Music,” Patti Smith’s three-night stand at the off-Broadway Minetta Lane Theater in the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village, was an intimate collection of vignettes from Smith’s life, connected like a string of Buddhist prayer flags; purposeful and deliberate. The evenings featured readings from Smith’s award-winning books, Just Kids and M Train, as well as poetry and, of course, a selection of Smith’s rock ‘n’ roll songs from across her amazing career.

On the latter, she was backed by her children, Jesse and Jackson, as well as Patti Smith Group stalwart Tony Shanahan, an ensemble that provided the perfect balance of accompaniment and camaraderie. It was just the right level of loud for both the space and the vibe, offering elegant quasi-acoustic, occasionally adapted arrangements of classics like “Dancing Barefoot” or “Because The Night.” Shanahan and Jackson Smith were especially inspired, the former’s versatility across compositions and instruments measured by the latter’s prolific fluidity, which reminded one of his late father’s talent.

Patti Smith has a history of readings and performances mixing poetry and literature, but these evenings were more cohesive and measured than those outings usually are, to great effect. Smith is a gifted storyteller as well as a warm and engaging raconteuse. One might not expect the Poet Laureate of punk rock to also delight in slightly slapstick humor; but longtime fans will be familiar with this side of her from her concerts. Likely it will be news to many of the subscribers to Audible, the digital spoken audio content provider who underwrote this series of shows and will release recordings of the performance through Audible Originals.

#3    Patti Smith’s AGO performances tonight will reflect spirit of photos,More info:thestar

To declare that tickets to Patti Smith’s twin performances at the Art Gallery of Ontario this Thursday evening are “like gold” would be understating their scarcity.

Still, if you’re among the 800 fans who came out on top during the bloody scramble early last month for passes to An Evening of Words and Song with Patti Smith – two evenings in one, actually, since the legendary punk-rock poetess is presiding over separate shows at 7:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. in the AGO’s Walker Court tonight – you might as well already start gloating about the unique experience(s) awaiting you.

The two AGO shows, presented in tandem with an exhibition of her black-and-white Polaroid photography entitled Patti Smith: Camera Solo and featuring accompaniment by her daughter Jesse and bassist/pianist Tony Shanahan, will be “quite simple.”
