The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is a protected area of the Philippines located about 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of the city centre of Puerto Princesa, Palawan. The river is also called Puerto Princesa Underground River. The national park is located in the Saint Paul Mountain Range on the western coast of the island. It is bordered by St. Paul Bay to the north and the Babuyan River to the east. The City Government of Puerto Princesa has managed the National Park since 1992. The entrance to the subterranean river is a short hike or boat ride from the town Sabang.

In 2010, a group of environmentalists and geologists discovered that the underground river has a second floor, which means that there are small waterfalls inside the cave. They also found a cave dome measuring 300 m (980 ft) above the underground river, rock formations, large bats, a deep water hole in the river, more river channels, and another deep cave, as well as marine creatures and more. Deeper areas of the underground river are almost impossible to explore due to oxygen deprivation.

On November 11, 2011, Puerto Princesa Underground River was provisionally chosen as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. This selection was officially confirmed on January 28, 2012.

The last time I was in a situation like this was at Disneyland. I was six years old and, despite being at the happiest place on earth, was starting to get a bit t-i-r-e-d as kids often do after a day of excitement.

The entrance to It’s a Small World was looming in front of me.

Perhaps my parents were trying to escape the crowds outside or maybe they thought it would be good for me to be trapped on a ride for 15 minutes. Either way, I was dragged onto a boat and taken on “the happiest cruise that ever sailed around the world”.

I don’t think I was happy. I mean, seriously, is anyone really happy at having 300 animatronic children sing the same line of song at them for that long?

It may be a small world after all, but it feels like a very long one when you can’t escape from that annoying shrill singing that just seems to go on and on and on.

This experience comes to mind thousands of kilometres away here on the island of Palawan in the Philippines more than 25 years later.

Once again I am being loaded onto a boat with a bunch of strangers to be taken into a dark tunnel where I will be trapped with no escape. Thankfully, I’m looking forward to it this time.

This park features a spectacular limestone karst landscape with an underground river. One of the river’s distinguishing features is that it emerges directly into the sea, and its lower portion is subject to tidal influences. The area also represents a significant habitat for biodiversity conservation. The site contains a full ‘mountain-to-sea’ ecosystem and has some of the most important forests in Asia.

The underground river is really pretty cool. The river goes into the mountain about 6km, but the tours only go in about 1km. The inside of the cave has tons of stalactite and stalagmite formations, most of which are named after things they look like, which usually requires a lot of imagination. Outside the cave, I saw huge monitor lizards and macaque monkeys. The underground river on Palawan is the longest navigable underground river in the world.

The Puerto Princesa Underground River is located in the Subterranean River National Park, a natural reserved located in the beach town of Sabang, approximately 80 kilometres north of Puerto Princesa, on Palawan Island.

Today, the Underground River is the 6th Natural Wonder of the World and a World Heritage Site. It has been recognised for having its own ecosystem and one of the most complex cave systems. Therefore, it is one of the most visited landmark in the Philippines. Which means it is VERY touristy. You’ve been warned.

To get there, you can book one of the daily tours leaving from Puerto Princesa. After some research, the most recommended and cheapest tour I found is organised by 3bs Tours and Travel (1,560 PHP/pax). The tours include transportation from/to your hotel to Sabang, lunch, permits, environmental fees, boat & guide.

If you’re like us and don’t particularly enjoy group tours, then you can organise your own tour of the Puerto Princesa Underground River.
