Ivory is a hard, white material from the tusks (traditionally elephants’) and teeth of animals, that can be used in art or manufacturing. It consists mainly of dentine, one of the physical structures of teeth and tusks. The chemical structure of the teeth and tusks of mammals is the same, regardless of the species of origin. The trade in certain teeth and tusks other than elephant is well established and widespread; therefore, “ivory” can correctly be used to describe any mammalian teeth or tusks of commercial interest which are large enough to be carved or scrimshawed.It has been valued since ancient times for making a range of items, from ivory carvings to false teeth, fans, dominoes and joint tubes.Elephant ivory is the most important source, but ivory from mammoth, walrus, hippopotamus, sperm whale, killer whale, narwhal and wart hog are used as well. China’s ivory trade ban has had positive effects in reducing ivory trade, since it came into effect at the end of 2017. However, more work must be done to tackle the trade, including urgent action to reduce ivory purchases from Chinese travellers visiting neighbouring countries.

New research released by WWF and TRAFFIC has shown that intention to buy ivory in China has dropped by almost half to 26%, in comparison to 2017 before the ban was in place. Alongside this, 9 out of 10 people asked in the consumer research said that they support the ivory ban in China.

All pre-ban legal ivory shops visited by TRAFFIC in 2018 have stopped selling ivory and the scale of, illegal ivory trade in most surveyed cities and online platforms has decreased.

However, despite these positive findings further efforts are needed.

A new British law banning all ivory sales has been welcomed by a dozen African states, and by campaigners who say poachers have been using the legal trade in antique ivory to cover their own activities.

The law has been described as the best Christmas present for the world’s threatened elephants, and a significant blow for the world’s ivory smugglers.

For years, Britain has been at the centre of a flourishing international trade in antique ivory.

But there’s evidence that the legal trade has fuelled demand, and provided cover for criminal gangs smuggling fresh tusks to China.

Now Britain is shutting its industry down, and calling on other European nations to follow suit. The environment secretary Michael Gove said the UK has shown global leadership.

In Africa, a few governments still argue that a managed ivory trade is the best policy.

But in many countries, elephant populations are being wiped out by heavily-armed gangs and campaigners insist that only a total ban on all ivory trade can save the species.

The United States will impose tough restrictions on the trade in ivory from African elephants, the US Fish and Wildlife Service announced on Thursday (2 June). Notable exceptions include antiques and musical instruments. EURACTIV’s partner Journal de l’Environnement reports.

The United States has a booming trade in illegal ivory, second only to China. In recent months, New Jersey, New York, California and Hawaii, states with a particularly flourishing ivory trade, have already taken measures to restrict the sale of legal ivory, which provides a cover for the illegal trade.
