The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is a hotel property on the Kohala Coast of the island of Hawaii. It sits at Kaunaʻoa Bay. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded the hotel an Honor Award in 1967 citing its “restrained detailing and fine spatial sequences.” In 2007, the hotel received honors again from the AIA as it made the top 150 of its “America’s Favorite Architecture” list,More info:wiki

Founded in 1965, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel was once the most exclusive and expensive resort of its day and, following extensive renovations nearly 50 years on, the hotel remains a landmark on the Big Island’s Kohala Coast, the golf capital of Hawaii.

The Mauna Kea has its own par-72 golf course in addition to the Seaside Tennis Club, a fitness centre, spa, kids’ club, boutiques, outdoor swimming pool and a wide array of water sports. The resort features a number of restaurants where international cuisine is combined with locally-sourced Kohala Coast ingredients, from Lu’au and Clambake to Monettes and Manta.

The Copper Terrace and Pavilion Wine Bar also provide attractive settings for pre and post-dinner drinks. Each featuring a private lanai, the 258 bright and airy guest rooms overlook either the ocean or golf course and amenities include a flat screen HDTV, iPod clock radio, Wi-Fi, mini-fridge and coffee maker.

Hawaiian Dredging was asked to restore the grounds to their award-winning status after a catastrophic earthquake had destroyed it.

In October 2006 the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, one of Hawaii’s largest and most luxurious, was destroyed by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake. The entire south end had collapsed. The top floor had been destroyed. Forced to close, the building was in danger of falling and over 200 rooms needed renovating.

The structure had to be secured and guest room units in the main tower were enlarged. The lobby and public area were also enlarged to create more retail spaces. Interior finishes were planned throughout, including teak casework and millwork, porcelain floor tiles, stone countertops, and lighting systems.

Large soaking tubs were installed along with walk-in closets. The luan wood and terrazzo flooring in the guest room units at the Beach Cottages were meticulously preserved. A new fitness center was added, along with motorized skylights, a Koi Pond, and a new IT system.
