Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is a Park (since 1981) in north east Brazil, (The name Lencois Maranhenses translates as “The bed sheets of Maranhão”) Lençóis Park is known for it’s bizarre phenomena: Blue lagoons which appear to sprite out of the desert’s sand dunes (even though it’s not actually a desert – there is too much rain to call this place a desert).
The lagoons get filled with fresh water via heavy rains which fill the lagoons – they are fullest around August each year.

prisna-google-website-translator]Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is without any doubt one of the most amazing place I’ve seen in my life, in all the 46 countries of the world I have visited. It is still not so famous, luckily for the few ones that knows it and can visit it.
Imagine a white sand desert full of pristine oasis of blue water, where you can bath and swim most of the time completely all by yourself. Yes, you can have your private oasis and it will be just you and your friends.
It can be visited only during brazilian winter – july, august – where the water collects and creates the oasis. Also because you will find a perfect temperature of 25 degrees.
There are several place to access the park, my reco is to land in the city of Sao Luis and take a tour from there. There are almost no public transportation, so hire a 4WD vehicle.
The first north entrance is on the little village of Santo Amaro. There is nothing there besides hotels, but it is the BEST place to start your daily trips inside the Lençóis park. That’s because you will be completely alone, since very few tourists access from here.

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, in Maranhão State, is one of Brazil’s top natural attractions. It is an ecosystem formed of white dunes which cover 383,000 acres and look like bedsheets (lençóis in Portuguese) spread out on the Northeastern coast. The dunes have been formed over thousands of years, as the sand from riverbeds is deposited at the mouth of the rivers and brought back to the continent by winds and sea currents.
The dunes advance as far as 31 miles inland and stretch along 27 miles of coastline, mostly deserted beaches. The seasonal lagoons fill up with rainwater, mostly during the first six months of the year, giving Lençóis Maranhenses its unique landscape. Mangroves, deserted beaches, bursitis—a graceful kind of palm tree—and the Preguiças River also contribute to the park’s biodiversity.

Strictly speaking, Lencois Maranhenses is not an actual desert, however when you are there, walking among the smooth white dunes without any vegetation, you can’t help it but feel like you are in some place like Sahara. Only the color of sand is a bit different. What is really strange is that this National Park is located in the tropical rain forest climate, surrounded by the sea from one side and by lush green woodlands from the other. Nevertheless, it’s not this fact that attracts thousands of tourists to visit Lencois Maranhenses from Brazil and all over the world. During the rainy season, starting from February, the gaps between the dunes become filled with rainwater creating unusual, spotty landscape, especially amazing seen from an airplane.
