#10     Photographing History and a Desire to See the Past in the Present,More info:activehistory

At December’s public consultations on the new Museum of Canadian History, Sean Kheraj, an assistant professor of history at York University, made a comment that stuck with me: by commemorating moments in history we actually learn as much about our present as our past. In trying to see the past through a contemporary lens, we blur history with nostalgia. Situating the past in a present context gives new meaning to both, and a greater understanding of not only how the built and social environments once were, but also what they’ve become.

Over a century after its inauguration, the Swiss National Museum in Zurich was due for an update. Christ & Gantenbein had the winning proposal to design the museum’s new extension wing, which appears like a “dramatically bent bridge”. The Camden Neighborhood of North Minneapolis, specifically the area between 42nd and 53rd on Lyndale Ave owes much of its roots to the lumber industry. From the 1880 until 1930, Camden produced more lumber then anywhere else in the world. With the decline of pine in the northern regions of Minnesota, the industry shifted in the area and the story of the Camden sawmills is all but a distant memory for the community.
