Red panda

The red panda is a mammal native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List because the wild population is estimated at fewer than 10,000 mature individuals and continues to decline due to habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and inbreeding depression,More info:wiki

Demand for products made from endangered red panda fur still persists on a low-scale in both physical and online markets in China, a report claimed.

Red pandas are native to temperate forests in the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. Wildlife trade monitor TRAFFIC maintained that there is still low-level demand for the animals as pets and for their furs and breeding purposes, according to a survey released on Tuesday.

The survey was carried out from April to May last year in the physical markets in the red panda hotspot trade zone of Tianquan, Kangding, Luding, Yuexi, Xide, Mianning, Xichuang, Lijiang, and Shangri-la, all in southwest China’s Sichuan and Yunnan provinces.

Red pandas can be easily identified by their unique ruddy coat color, which acts like camouflage within the canopy of fir trees where branches are covered with clumps of reddish-brown moss and white lichens.

They have large, round heads and short snouts with big, pointed ears. Their faces are white with reddish-brown “tear” marks that extend from the eyes to the corner of the mouth. These markings could have evolved to help keep the sun out of their eyes. Their tails are marked with alternating red and buff rings.

Red pandas have a soft, dense woolly undercoat covered by long, coarse guard hairs. Long, bushy tails help these arboreal animals maintain balance and protect them from harsh cold and winds. Dense fur completely covers their feet which have five, widely separated toes and semi-retractable claws.

Three red pandas took full advantage of a weather-induced opportunity last winter and escaped from their home in the Hangzhou Zoo.

A branch in the pandas’ cage broke under the weight of the snow, giving the trio a chance to experience a bit of the great outdoors.

Two of the adventurous pandas were located and returned to their cage shortly after escaping. But the third managed to extend the vacation from the zoo for eight months. A whopping 242 days after making an escape, the panda was spotted in a tree near the zoo this week.
