Oats | Healthiest Foods

The oat , sometimes called the common oat, is a species of cereal grain grown for its seed, which is known by the same name (usually in the plural, unlike other cereals and pseudocereals). While oats are suitable for human consumption as oatmeal and rolled oats, one of the most common uses is as livestock feed. Oats are a nutrient-rich food associated with lower blood cholesterol when consumed regularly,More info:wiki

#10       The Only Basic Steel-Cut Oats Recipe You’ll Ever Need,More info:cookinglight

Our foolproof, basic steel-cut oatmeal recipe is the perfect building block for an ultra-nutritious breakfast. Memorize the ratio—3 parts liquid to 1 part oats—then customize your bowl with a delicious array of fresh toppings. Cinnamon and honey keep things sweet and simple, but there’s plenty of space to spice up your bowl with exotic combos—try cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, or ginger. And yes, steel-cut oats take longer to cook than other types of oats, but their toothsome texture and nutty flavor make them well-worth the effort. Best of all, they reheat beautifully, so you can easily cook up a big batch ahead of time.

For a richer, nuttier flavor, try toasting your oats in the pan first. Keep the heat at medium-low and stir constantly to prevent burning.

Short on time? Our basic oatmeal recipe is your go-to healthy breakfast for busy mornings.

Overnight oats are a dream breakfast. They take less than 5 minutes to prepare the night before, and all you need to do is add toppings the next morning. Steel cut oats are ideal for this method since they still retain their toothy bite even after overnight (and 2-day) soaks without getting mushy. The key to getting them to the right texture is hot milk—it needs to be hot in order to soften the oats; cold milk simply can’t tenderize them during an overnight soak. For ease, you can divide the overnight oats mixture between two separate bowls or mason jars to make morning breakfast prep even easier.

I think a lot about how the lives we imagine for ourselves when we’re young inevitably fail us. We grow up thinking we’ll be an astronaut, married by 25, herding a gaggle of kids by 30, winning an Academy Award at 40, and so on. (Nota bene: Those are not my personal goals—just an imagined human’s.) As we grow and fail to set foot in outer space, find our husband missing in action along with the kids, and no masterpiece upon which to hang an Oscar, the knowledge settles in: The life we are living is, usually, deeply distinct from the one we thought we’d lead.

It struck me a few years ago, as I contemplated the small and large deviances from my expected path, that the life I’m living now is a kind of newborn alien being, emerged from the cracked and discarded shell of all those previous imaginings. As we grow, we must crack open, again and again, the shell of that fantasy life in order to see the life that we are currently living for what it actually is. If we resist it, fighting all the way, we can’t really experience it.

It’s hard to go wrong with a classic bowl of porridge made with rolled oats and stacked with all of the toppings, but sometimes you just don’t have time. I get like this during the week, when I need to just grab something and rush out the door to work or uni. But no matter how busy it gets I really don’t like to skip breakfast.
