#10     Boston Public Library Receives $1 Million Donation,More info:massmoments

On this day in 1947, self-made millionaire John Deferrari donated over $1,000,000 to the Boston Public Library to express his gratitude to the institution he credited with his success. The son of poor Italian immigrants, Defarrari used the library’s resources to transform himself from a hard-working fruit peddler into a wealthy, if eccentric, investor. When the BPL was established in 1848, it was the first publicly supported municipal library in America. It soon introduced a truly revolutionary idea: it allowed people to borrow books. Other innovations followed. In 1870 it opened the first branch library in the United States. In 1895 it was the first to establish a room specifically designated for children.

#5     Boston Public Library, Central Library Renovation,More info:aia

Anchoring Boston’s Avenue of the Arts—the city’s most walkable street—and surrounded by retail destinations, the renovation of this 156,000-square-foot civic monument enables a much wider spectrum of the city’s populace to further enjoy one of Boston’s true treasures. Embracing the concept of a library as a big urban room, it provides immersive and engaging learning experiences for patrons inside as well as pedestrians who pass by.

Originally constructed in 1895, the library received an inward-facing addition in 1972. This renovation has dramatically transformed the second wing from a solid stone bunker to an inviting light-filled space that spills out into a newly defined public plaza. To honor the landmark building while redefining its use for a new era, the design team adhered to a set of core principles for preserving successful elements of the original beloved but outdated design. Increasing ceiling height and replacing dark-tinted glass and stone walls with floor-to-ceiling windows has completely opened the library’s interior to the city streets that surround the library on three sides.

Each year the Central Branch of the Boston Public Library has shown support for the Boston Pride celebration by flying pride flags off the McKim building for the month of June. This year, they’re bringing that support inside the library as well.

For the first time, the library is releasing a “We Are Pride” booklist, which will include recent reading selections for children, teens, and adults from the Boston Public Library Staff. It is designed to represent the differing experiences across the LGBTQ+ community though different types of literary expression, and includes everything from nonfiction to romance and erotica.

#2       Drink Tea Cocktails Inside the Boston Public Library, Starting Next Week,More info:boston.eater

Big things are happening at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square. A new tea-focused bar and lounge called the Map Room Tea Lounge will open its doors on Wednesday, March 20, and the former Courtyard Restaurant has reinvented itself as the Courtyard Tea Room. Both cafes are operated by catering company the Catered Affair. The Map Room Tea Lounge will be open in a limited capacity initially, and it will have a grand opening on May 21.

Appropriately for a library lounge, the menu at the Map Room Tea Lounge is inspired by 19th century authors like Charles Dickens and by authors of other eras as well.
