The Getty Center, in Los Angeles, California, is a campus of the Getty Museum and other programs of the Getty Trust. The $1.3 billion Center opened to the public on December 16, 1997 and is well known for its architecture, gardens, and views overlooking Los Angeles. The Getty Center opened to the public on December 16, 1997, providing a new home for the arts institution founded by J. Paul Getty on a much smaller scale in 1953. Here on The Iris, the Getty’s president and the directors of our four programs will reflect on our past 20 years and the Getty’s relationship with Los Angeles. This first post is adapted from the foreword to the forthcoming J. Paul Getty Trust Report, publishing online and in print in February 2018, which honors the legacy of Harold M. #7       THE GETTY CENTER IN LOS ANGELES,More info:alessandrobenetton

Last summer I stopped by Los Angeles where I visited what I can only now define as one of the most stunning museums I have ever seen, the Getty. A truly enchanted and mesmerising place, a gift from philanthropist, wealthy oil magnate and passionate art collector J. Paul Getty. In 1954 he decided to open the J. Paul Getty Museum, which was first located within his Malibu villa. When the collection became so large it could no longer fit in there, he added a second location, the Getty Center, launched in 1997.

The Getty Center is a sort of idyllic citadel clinging to a hill, a series of buildings boasting masterfully combined squared shapes crossed by galleries packed with modern art masterpieces. The complex has been designed by architect Richard Meier (the same guy who at 49 years of age, became the youngest-ever architect to be awarded with the Pritzker Prize), who decided to combine his signature white smooth surfaces with more traditional materials, even travertine extracted from a cave near Rome. The collection is huge: there are pieces of art from Europe and North America, from the Middle Ages until now.

Fire agencies report that the Woolsey fire is nearing full containment and total damage is being assessed. Officials have increased the number of structures destroyed to 1,500. Cooler weather has arrived and there is rain in the forecast for Wednesday. Utilities and local agencies are now in recovery mode, restoring power, water, and infrastructure to many communities.

The Getty Villa will reopen to the public this Friday, November 23.

Visitors with parking reservations on the dates the Villa was closed have been provided information about rescheduling. The Getty Villa and Getty Center both remain safe and sound and we always have extensive fire prevention efforts in place. At no point was the Getty Villa threatened by the Woolsey Fire. The Getty Center is open and operating under its normal hours.
