Van Morrison | A Greatest Singer

Sir George Ivan Morrison OBE (born 31 August 1945), better known as Van Morrison, is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter, instrumentalist and record producer. His professional career began as a teenager in the late 1950s playing a variety of instruments including guitar, harmonica, keyboards and saxophone for various Irish showbands, covering the popular hits of that time. Van Morrison rose to prominence in the mid-1960s as the lead singer of the Northern Irish R&B band Them, with whom he recorded the garage band classic “Gloria”. His solo career began under the pop-hit oriented guidance of Bert Berns with the release of the hit single “Brown Eyed Girl” in 1967. After Berns’s death, Warner Bros. Records bought out his contract and allowed him three sessions to record Astral Weeks (1968). Though this album gradually garnered high praise, it was initially a poor seller,More info:wiki

As Stereogum reported, Morrison began developing his trademark post-Them sound during a series of low-key performances in Boston during August of that year, accompanied by a local bassist and flautist. The experiments would shape his groundbreaking second album Astral Weeks.

Van Morrison was having a good night. Nothing transcendent, mind you. But for fans of the famously unpredictable Irish singer-songwriter, who all-too-frequently phones in his performances, the first set of his two-night stand at the intimate SFJazz Center in San Francisco on Tuesday, Oct. 18, felt like a minor triumph.

If the newly knighted Belfast native, who just turned 71, was aware of the sense of occasion that came with playing in the venue’s 700-capacity Miner Auditorium rather than the big festival sheds where he spent his summer, it didn’t show.
