Aerial shots of the stunning blue-green waters and dozens of waterfalls in Plitvice Lakes seems to be the tipping point in convincing people they have to visit Croatia. Ironically, we only found Plitvice Lakes after booking our ticket; it was Krka National Park that first drew us to Croatia, another park with waterfalls galore. Lucky we did, because visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the most memorable experience we had this last year.
Plitvice Lakes is the largest National Park in Croatia, and I’m betting it has the most waterfalls too. There are 16 lakes, with water so aqua and clear it looks unreal, cascading down natural travertine dams in between. The lakes are created by the karst area; a lot of what that means is over my head, but essentially there is a lot of porous rock in the area, like limestone, that allows the water to sink through and form caves and underground rivers. When the waters reach hard rock, it begins to seep back up, forming the lakes that we see.

The Plitvice Lakes National Park, located roughly halfway between the capital city of Zagreb and Zadar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The country’s biggest natural attraction presents some of the most eye-catching scenery in mainland Croatia.
The 16 lakes are famous for their stunning colors, often changing from shades of teal, turquoise and deep blues to gray. In the park, wooden footbridges and pathways run across the edges of the lakes, over rumbling water, through verdant forests and very close to tumbling waterfalls.

I read a lot of blogs and they always help me in planning what to see and how much time to spend somewhere. I wish I hadn’t read anything on Croatia’s famous Plitvice Lakes, because the National Park in our opinion really requires more than the one night stay/ half day excursion that most bloggers suggest. But maybe that’s because we’re old and no longer enjoy rushing through things.
For those not familiar with Plitvice lakes National Park: it is a Unesco World Heritage Site, the oldest National Park in Croatia, and is considered one of the most beautiful National Parks in Europe. It is known for its sixteen lakes which range from clear to turquoise and for the waterfalls, canyons, and streams that shape the landscape around these lakes. It really is a ‘waterworld’ which the visitor can access by following the wooden paths that have been laid out around the waterfalls and over the streams.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of Croatia’s national treasures, where boardwalks and hiking trails wind around 12 upper lakes and 4 lower lakes. Kids of all ages will love walking along wooden pathways at the foot of beautiful waterfalls. Visiting this UNESCO World Heritage site has been on our list of places to visit for so long and we could barely contain our excitement!
After a bit of a rocky start, we are happy to report that it is definitely worth the trip. Even though it can be very crowded, don’t skip out on visiting Plitvice Lakes with kids. You are virtually guaranteed to fall in love with this place!
