Trolltunga | Most Beautiful Travel

Trolltunga (Troll tongue) is a rock formation situated about 1,100 metres above sea level in the municipality of Odda in Hordaland county, Norway. The special cliff is jutting horizontally out from the mountain, into free air about 700 metres (2,300 ft) above the north side of the lake Ringedalsvatnet.

Popularity of the hike to Trolltunga and rock formation itself has exploded in recent years. The increased popularity has turned Trolltunga into a national icon and a major tourist attraction for the region. Until 2010, less than 800 people hiked to Trolltunga each year. In 2016 more than 80,000 people hikedthe 27 kilometres round-trip from Skjeggedal, making it one of Norway’s most popular hikes,More info:wiki

As far as walks go, this is one of the most epic I’ve ever done. The Trolltunga hike is an all day round trip – up muddy hills, across rocky slopes, through snowfields and along cliff edges. And at the end of the route is the ultimate payoff. The Troll’s Tongue!

This is the Trolltunga hike in southwestern Norway, a few hours drive from Bergen. It is difficult, it is long, and it is spectacular.

It’s one of the best ways to experience the stunning landscapes of this country.

Hiking Trolltunga, Norway, that place you’ve seen on Instagram travel accounts a bazillion times, is the most adventurous thing I’ve done in my life.

For me, that’s saying a lot. I’ve traveled a fair bit in my lifetime, and I can’t think of anything else I’ve done that was more strenuous or exhausting than this hike.

I even learned a few new things, and was reminded of some lessons I had forgotten.

Here are 5 things I learned from hiking “Troll’s Tongue”.

(I apologize in advance for the portrait videos, these were all filmed in Instagram Stories. Also, the heavy breathing… IT WAS HARD OK)

#4       Trolltunga – 23 km to see a troll’s tongue,More info:onedaystop

The impression is almost surreal. Trolltunga − a flat, narrow and a more than a dozen meters long rock hangs 700m above a lake that winds like a snake. Formed by a glacier 10 000 years ago is now the main attraction of Norway.  Ironically – one of the most challenging and hard to reach. Demands are cruel −  to get on a trail we wake before 6:00 am.

Very early morning the camping is full of hustle and bustle. The site is rather small and a majority of guests come here just for one night  to  catch the tongue and move on. Just like us. With a dawn above us, we struggle with packing sleeping bags and tent. Modest breakfast, quick shower and we are ready to hit the trail.

Generally, my travels rime with strolling, preferably under the sun, and preferably in cities. Those past few years, I had so much fun exploring most of the main European capitals. But surprisingly, since I’ve reached the « 30 mark », I have started to be more into nature, big spaces, challenging and more intense adventures. Is it called being old and boring? Or just mature? Not sure. But I do love it more and more.
But anyway, when my friend Helene suggested the idea of a 3 days weekend in Norway that would include the « Trolltunga Hike », back in January, I was in a rather positive mood, so I said yes.

New country, new challenge, international team composed of people I never met, perfect opportunity for some change.
