The taxonomical genus Pan consists of two extant species: the common chimpanzee and the bonobo. Together with humans, gorillas, and orangutans they are part of the family Hominidae . Native to sub-Saharan Africa, common chimpanzees and bonobos are currently both found in the Congo jungle, while only the common chimpanzee is also found further north in West Africa. Both species are listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and in 2017 the Convention on Migratory Species selected the common chimpanzee for special protection ,more info:wiki

Much of the headline-grabbing research about chimpanzees, humans’ closest animal relatives, is framed in terms of how good chimps are at doing things we do. Well, here’s a new finding on something those great apes trounce us at: Recognizing each other’s butts.

They’re good at this in the same way we people are at recognizing individual faces. Unlike other common objects, we tell one face from another in a holistic way, processing the eyes, nose, lips and other features together. When we see images of faces turned upside-down, we’re disproportionately worse at recognizing them than we are at recognizing, say, a flipped car.

Did you know that chimpanzees are among the most intelligent animals on the earth. They are apes that belong to the genus Pan in the family Hominidae. There are two species of chimpanzees – Pan troglodytes (common chimpanzee) and Pan paniscus (Bonobo). These animals are found in the tropical forests of West and Central Africa. Their habitat includes tropical forests, open grassland, mountainous regions and deciduous woodland. They are mostly found in and around areas with lots of fruit bearing trees. A major part of the chimpanzee diet includes fruits and leaves. They also feed on animal prey that include insects like ants and termites. Bigger animals are hunted occasionally. As in case of most of the other animals, even chimpanzees are found to have certain adaptations that help them to live in their environment.

Chimpanzees and humans share a surprising number of similarities. For starters, chimpanzees and people share nearly identical genetic DNA. More recently, another similarity has been discovered: the presence of culture in chimpanzees.

Culture has historically been regarded as a distinguishing feature of what makes humans unique. Culture is defined as “the integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations.” However, scientists have discovered evidence of culture in different animal species. The strongest and most diverse evidence of culture in animals has been found in chimpanzees.

Jane Goodall’s long-term research on the chimpanzees of Gombe contributed to a comprehensive study that identified almost 40 different behaviour patterns in chimpanzees that are an indication of significant cultural variation. These behaviours include differences in tool use, aimed throwing, nest building, grooming, rain dances, and courtship rituals, and were found to be customary in some communities while absent in others. Researchers ruled out the possibility of the natural environment as influencing such differences. Instead the variation in behaviour was traced to multi-generational social learning and customs — in other words, culture.

The Common chimpanzee occupies a broad range compared to the bonobo and can be found in 21 African countries. They are found north of the River Congo in humid closed-canopy forests, montane forest (up to 6,500 ft.), seasonally dry forests and savanna-woodlands. Population densities vary from area to area. When occasionally seen on flat savannas it is only while moving from one forest patch to another.
