The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot monument in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Clad in stainless steel and built in the form of a weighted catenary arch,it is the world’s tallest arch,the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere, and Missouri’s tallest accessible building. On July 3, the new museum at St. Louis’ iconic Gateway Arch opened to the public, the culmination of a multi-million dollar campaign to unify the city and update one of the nation’s most recognizable man-made landmarks.

The imposing 630-foot-tall concrete and stainless-steel structure towers over the St. Louis riverfront, and commemorates Thomas Jefferson and the role St. Louis played in the westward expansion of the United States.

Completed in 1965, the arch offers tram rides to a viewing platform at its top. Now, after $380 million worth of upgrades, the park land around the monument and the underground museum below it are being readied for visitors. Recently, CNBC got a preview of the upgraded ground-level Gateway Arch experience.

“People talk about the Gateway Arch the way they talk about the pyramids or the Eiffel Tower,” Eric Moraczewski, executive director at the Gateway Arch Park Foundation, told CNN Travel.

When Moraczewski started his job, he immediately knew the museum was due for a makeover. Many of the exhibits were old and out of date, with animatronic versions of explorers Lewis and Clark and taxidermied buffaloes that had damaged by years of grabby tourist hands.

There also wasn’t much information about the arch itself or how it was built, which was the number one thing many visitors had questions about.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) gave the public a look tonight at its plan to build what it calls a “lid” to connect downtown St. Louis with the Gateway Arch.

But before it breaks ground, MoDOT Engineer Deanna Venker said the agency has to take into account a whole range of potential impacts.

“You can’t just come through and blight out a neighborhood, you need to consider all of your environmental impacts,” Venker said. “That’s really what today is about, is going through and making sure we aren’t hitting any historical features. That we’ve worked with all of our partners in making sure that this project is good for everybody.”

Venker said the final design, however, has yet to be completed and the agency will take public comments online for the next two weeks.

The meeting also brought together a number of stakeholder groups working on the overall plan to revamp the park around the Arch.

Ryan McClure is a spokesperson for the non-profit City Arch River and said the project could provide downtown with an economic boost.
