Bagan | Most Beautiful Travel

Bagan  is an ancient city located in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar. From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, the first kingdom that unified the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar. During the kingdom’s height between the 11th and 13th centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2,200 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day,More info:wiki

Bagan is the highlight of Myanmar and for many travelers the only reason to visit this fascinating country. With roughly 4400 temples Bagan earned the name of “Temple Capital of the World”. The temples date from around the same period as those of Angkor. Maybe Angkor’s individual temples may be more spectacular, but Bagan’s brilliance is in the amazing views of temple upon temple dotting the plain. Dusk and dawns are simply magnificent.

I spent 2 days, in late 2013, walking and cycling around the enormous site. Here’s my photo essay of that day.

With thousands of stupas and payas to visit, there is no single optimal itinerary for seeing Bagan’s collection of temples. The temples in this list are recognized to be Bagan’s biggest, most scenic, and most popular, and should definitely be included in any Bagan temple-hopping itinerary lasting more than a day.

For half-day temple runs, my guide Aung Kyaw Moe says you stick with two stops: “For a half-day trip, you visit Shwezigon and Ananda temples,” says Mr. Aung. “If you have already been to these two places, it’s OK.” For longer tours, arrange your temple jaunts around the spots listed here.

Bagan is a plain covering about 16 square meters and its monuments seem to overwhelm its landscape. The 2000 monuments in the region have different sizes and shapes. They are also in their own individual stages of preservation- some have been properly preserved and visited by devotees; the others are only piles of bricks.

The Temples and Pagodas were constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries. This was the time when the region was the seat of the Myanmar Dynasty.

The Buddhist rock caves inspired the temples of the region which are also known as “gu”. The massively built temples have frescoed corridors and sacred images that used to be worshiped once.

#3   CYCLING BAGAN: HIGHLIGHTS AND ROUTE MAP,More info:atlasandboots

We spent our final day in Myanmar cycling around Bagan, the world’s largest and densest concentration of Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins

After cycling over 250km (155mi) across Myanmar including a 83km (52mi) slog up to Mount Popa, the final day of our cycling tour of Myanmar – a mere 25km (15mi) around the temples of Bagan – was going to a be cinch.

Despite the short distances, the Burmese sun was shining strongly and with it came the vaporous Burmese heat. Thankfully, with over 2,000 Buddhist structures spread across 104 sq km (40 sq mi) there was regular relief in the cool and airy stone temples.
