Batu Caves, one of Kuala Lumpur’s most frequented tourist attractions, is a limestone hill comprising three major caves and a number of smaller ones. Located approximately 11 kilometres to the north of Kuala Lumpur, this 100-year-old temple features idols and statues erected inside the main caves and around it. Incorporated with interior limestone formations said to be around 400 million years old, the temple is considered an important religious landmark by Hindus.
Cathedral Cave – the largest and most popular cavern in Batu Caves – houses several Hindu shrines beneath its 100-metre-high arched ceiling. At the foot of Batu Hill are two other cave temples – the Art Gallery Cave and Museum Cave – which houses numerous Hindu statues and paintings.

Do you know that Batu Caves is usually listed as a sightseeing attraction in Kuala Lumpur, and that is actually incorrect? It is easy to get it wrong. As a Malaysian, even I struggle in the explanation bit, but let me give it a go. Geographically, Kuala Lumpur is located in Selangor but politically, since 1974, KL has seceded from Selangor to become a federal territory. Batu Caves’s address is in Gombak District, and that falls under Selangor. If you really want to know, Gombak borders Kuala Lumpur to the southeast.

Dozens of macaque monkeys ushered visitors up the 272-step staircase to the Temple Cave. Actually, saying that they were “ushering” would be sugarcoating it. Not only did some of them follow visitors around, a few also found themselves on one end of a mini-brawl when they start getting territorial or when they just try to snatch food from unsuspecting tourists.
