Trinity Church was founded in 1833 by a group of prominent citizens, including some with Southern connections. Warden Charles Steadman built a wooden church in the Greek style. The parish prospered and in 1870 the original structure was replaced by a stone Gothic-style church designed by Richard M. Upjohn. This building was enlarged in the early years of the 20th century with the lengthening of the nave, a larger chancel, a chapel adjacent to the north transept and a heightened tower.

During its first 80 years, Trinity had six rectors, one staying 48 years. It clearly was a different day, when a rector’s traditional functions in a small town centered on visiting parishioners, on baptizing, marrying, and burying, and on conducting Divine Service on Sundays. The Victorian era saw Trinity deviate from tradition in a notable way, reaching out to the community beyond its doors.

In 1850 a Gothic schoolhouse was built to serve as a Sunday School for parish children (itself an innovation), and at other times as a school for African-American children, whom the local schools did not serve. In the second half of the 19th century, Trinity founded several nearby missions, of which two survive: one is Trinity Church, Rocky Hill, a “family-size” parish north of Princeton and the other is St. Barnabas, Kendall Park, a larger parish northeast of Princeton, now surrounded by suburban housing built in the last 40 years.

In 1875, Trinity founded the St. Paul’s Society for students at Princeton University, where the number of Episcopalians had grown. Now called the Episcopal Church at Princeton University (ECP), it is supported by the William Alexander Procter Foundation. ECP has long had a full-time chaplain who conducts regular worship in the University Chapel, and holds student events at the Foundation’s Procter House adjacent to the campus.

#6   Trinity Church’s landmark Broadway chapel will undergo two-year renovation,More info:curbed

One of lower Manhattan’s oldest landmarks is getting an upgrade: Trinity Church will undergo a series of renovations with the goal of expanding its historic Broadway campus, which includes the main nave, the Chapel of All Saints, and the churchyard (where Alexander Hamilton is buried).

During the renovation, which begins this month and is expected to be complete in 2020, the main nave will be closed to the public. Some of its events will move to St. Paul’s Chapel, just a few blocks up Broadway, while others will be held in the All Saints chapel.

Trinity’s current home at 75 Broadway is the third building that the parish has occupied in its 300-year history; the structure, designed by Richard Upjohn in the Gothic Revival style, was designated as one of New York City’s earliest landmarks in 1965.

Earlier this year, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved changes to the church, which will be undertaken by Murphy Burnham & Buttrick. The “rejuvenation,” as the church is calling it, will both modernize the building—by adding in ramps to make the whole thing ADA compliant, redesigning pews, replacing organs, and installing gender-neutral restrooms—and bring parts of it back to Upjohn’s original design. Its capacity will be expanded by about 140 seats, and historic elements like stained glass windows, clerestory windows, and interior walls will be restored.

Joyous praise is the natural response to God’s character and provision. That was the overall tone of the day Sept. 10, 2017, when Trinity Church of Portland celebrated their seven-year anniversary and new permanent church home. Over 350 people attended the celebration, which included a worship service and BBQ lunch.

The service included testimonies of long-time members who shared how God had worked in their lives through Trinity Church. They recounted benefits of their church membership such as exposure to Christ-centered preaching, meaningful opportunities to serve, ministry training and a hard-won love for the Body of Christ.

The congregation also heard from special guests Don Morris, USMB national director, and Gary Wall, Pacific District Conference minister, who shared the history of Trinity’s beginnings and what they had witnessed throughout its years of growth.

Preaching from Nehemiah 12, Art Azurdia, senior minister of word and worship at Trinity Church, taught about the occurrence of worship prompted by all that God had provided the Israelites at that time: freedom from exile, the ability to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem and a national spiritual awakening. Azurdia described the event as “such a memorable occasion of praise that God has seen fit to include the record of it in his Word for our benefit.” He exhorted the congregation that, like the Israelites, they too had much reason to praise God with great reverence and joy.
