I’ve gotten a bit of grief over the fact that most of my bird-ID columns have focused on Eastern species. Guilty as charged. I have no defense except that I’m an Eastern birder, and these are the birds I know.

But I want to make it up to you, and so today we’re going to look at some birds that, for the most part, you can only find out West. These are birds that many of us long for, from backyard-feeder watchers to a crusty old listers. I’m talking about goldfinches.

Believe it or not, we’ve got three different goldfinch species in this country: the American Goldfinch, Lesser Goldfinch, and Lawrence’s Goldfinch.

Patches of thistles and weeds, roadsides, open woods, edges. Found at all seasons in semi-open areas having open weedy ground and some trees and bushes for shelter, especially areas of second growth, streamsides, roadsides, woodland edges, orchards, suburban areas. In winter also in some very open fields farther from trees.

A typical summer sight is a male American Goldfinch flying over a meadow, flashing golden in the sun, calling perchickory as it bounds up and down in flight. In winter, when males and females alike are colored in subtler brown, flocks of goldfinches congregate in weedy fields and at feeders, making musical and plaintive calls. In most regions this is a late nester, beginning to nest in mid-summer, perhaps to assure a peak supply of late-summer seeds for feeding its young.

Tiny yellowish finch. Blackish conical bill is stout, but sharply pointed. Long wings are black with one white wingbar and large white patch at the base of the primaries. Small head. Short notched tail. Adult males have either green or black (Texas to South America) back. Regularly visits feeders. Females similar to American Goldfinch; note bill shape and color, usually more yellowish undertail coverts, less distinct wingbars, and more obvious white patch at base of primaries.
