Soaring high over the Quadracci Pavilion, the awe-inspiring Burke Brise Soleil kinetic sculpture looks as if poised to take flight over the western coast of Lake Michigan. However, thanks to some amazing engineering and science, the Brise Soleil sculpture and Windhover Hall stay firmly roosted atop the Milwaukee Art Museum Quadracci Pavilion, the 2001 expansion that added over 142,00 square feet of space.

While the Burke Brise Soleil, designed by Spanish architect and artist Santiago Calatrava, conjures images of sails full of wind, the outstretched wings of birds in flight, and the bow of a ship cutting through a wave, it has a much more functional role in that it is also a sun screen designed to manage the level of sunlight entering the cathedral-like glass ceiling of Windhover Hall which helps to manage the interior temperature.

It’s been a few months since Marcelle Polednik took over as the new director of the Milwaukee Art Museum. But her appointment to such a prominent role in the Milwaukee cultural scene is attracting plenty of attention.

Milwaukee Magazine’s editor, Carole Nicksin, is also a recent addition to the scene, and she had the chance to profile Polednik in the November issue.

“My top-line impression: she’s very smart, and she’s very passionate about art,” she says. “She also seems to have a background in administration, so I think that she’s that rare bird who balances both.”

Even though Polednik is only 39 years old, she has substantial experience at her previous job at the Moca in Jacksonville, Florida.

“One of the exciting things she did there was create Project Atrium, where she would bring in artists from all over the country to work in their atrium. So, it was this great interactive opportunity for the community…and created engagement, which I think is so important,” Nicksin notes.

#5   Milwaukee Art Museum: A Peek at Its Renovation,More info:midwestwanderer

The Milwaukee Art Museum, one of the oldest art museums in the nation, reopened its Collection Galleries last week following a renovation six years in the making. The $34 million renovation added 16,000 square feet of space and completely transformed placement of artwork and wayfinding. The new east end addition opens the museum once again to the beauty of Lake Michigan, right outside its doorstep, and the remodel of the oldest museum sections creates an easy flow from one area to another with surprises around every corner.

We took a peek at the changes during a media preview a few weeks ago as the final touches to the renovation were being applied. Having never been to the museum before, we can’t compare the old with the new, but what we saw was impressive.

The preview started with a short ceremony in the Quadracci Pavilion, the 2001 addition that is an artwork in itself. The sculptural architecture, designed by Santiano Calatrava, stretches to the Lake Michigan shore. Its “wings” that span 217 feet fold and unfold twice daily. Inside, the vaulted glass ceiling soars 90 feet high.
