WASHINGTON — Washington, DC, police have identified a man who shot himself in the head in front of the White House just before noon Saturday as 26-year-old Cameron Ross Burgess of Maylene, Alabama.

“At approximately 11:46 am, Burgess approached the vicinity of the North White House fence line and removed a concealed handgun and fired several rounds, none of which appear at this time to have been directed towards the White House,” the Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement Sunday.

A law enforcement source told CNN the shooter shot his phone before shooting himself. No suicide note was found, but incoherent sentences were found in a book recovered on the scene, the source said.

The man died from his injuries, but no one else was hurt, a Secret Service spokesperson said.

The victim suffered a single gunshot wound, and Secret Service personnel did not fire any shots, Secret Service spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan said.

#6    PA County Commissioners Get White House Invitation, But Don’t Know Why Or Who They’ll Meet,More info:wesa.fm

Somerset County Commission Chair Gerald Walker said when he got a call from the White House saying he and all the other county commissioners in the state would be invited to a July 13 meeting at the White House, he thought it might be a joke.

“You have to wonder if that’s the real deal when you just get a phone call like that out of the blue,” Walker said.

When the printed invitation arrived in the mail a few days later, he knew it was real.

The invitation said top administrators from every department and agency would be on hand at the meeting, but it does not say who specifically. It also does not say how the event will be formatted nor does it specify what’s on the agenda.

Walker, a Republican, said he is looking to build direct relationships with the administration.

President Barack Obama commented on the rainbow lights that shined on the White House Friday after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, saying there were “pretty cool.”

During a press conference with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, Obama revealed he was unable to view the lit-up White House himself because it would have been a security issue, and he didn’t want to clear out the crowds that had gathered to celebrate the court’s ruling. But he said the moment was “worth savoring.”

WASHINGTON — President Trump is vacationing at his New Jersey resort because the White House is undergoing extensive renovations, administration officials said Tuesday.

Officials released a full list of the projects, which they said include updating West Wing bathrooms that haven’t been touched in “approximately 40 years.”

Upgrades were also being made to the West Wing elevator and the Navy Mess Kitchen.

In the residence, workers were patching a crack in the East Room ceiling, which poses a safety risk to the first family, officials said.

Rotting wood on the arbor in the Jackie Kennedy Garden was also be replaced. And several aging doors and windows were to be swapped out.

Who knew that all that rain in D.C. over the past week would lead to the perfect storm of “Drain the Swamp” Twitter jokes? Reporters spotted a sinkhole on the North Lawn of the White House over the weekend, and it appears to be growing.

“It’s all river deposits,” volcanologist Jess Phoenix told the New York Times. “It’s sort of fluids interacting with solids, and gravity taking effect,” she explained, “not the gates of hell opening.” Good to know!

#2    The Obama Family’s Stylish Home Inside the White House,More info:architecturaldigest

Considering the epochal achievements of the Obama administration—the Affordable Care Act, the legalization of same-sex marriage, the Recovery Act, the Paris Agreement on climate change, and so much more—it seems trivial to append a footnote that reads, “The President and First Lady have a pretty chic dining room, too.” But the fact is, they do. And for anyone who appreciates the power of design, Michelle and Barack Obama’s emendations to the White House speak volumes about the sea change in American culture the two have championed for the past eight years. Adorned with an unprecedented array of 20th- and 21st-century artworks, their private quarters remain an oasis of civility and, yes, refined taste in a political arena so often bereft of both.
