The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the City and Diocese of Washington, commonly known as Washington National Cathedral, is a cathedral of the Episcopal Church located in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. The structure is of Neo-Gothic design closely modeled on English Gothic style of the late fourteenth century. It is both the second-largest church building in the United States, and the fourth-tallest structure in Washington, D.C. The cathedral is the seat of both the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Michael Bruce Curry, and the Bishop of the Diocese of Washington, Mariann Edgar Budde. Over 270,000 people visit the structure annually,More info:wiki

Stained-glass windows, Gothic spires and flying buttresses make the Washington National Cathedral look ages old, but the grand church was actually constructed during the 20th century. Though overseen by the Episcopal Church, the house of worship welcomes people of all faiths to its impressive site on the highest point in DC.

It was an idea long in the making. It was a site unequaled in the city. It was under construction for eighty-three years. It is the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the City and Diocese of Washington, D.C. Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s original plans for the nation’s capital proposed a site a few blocks east of the White House. Some hundred years later, in 1907, a much more impressive site, Mt. St. Alban in the northwestern sector of the city was chosen, the cornerstone laid by President Teddy Roosevelt. President George H.W. Bush oversaw the placement of the “final finial” in 1990. Though the longest running construction project in the history of the city, as Gothic cathedrals go, a construction period of a mere eighty-three years could almost be classed as “instant church.” European cathedrals often marked their construction periods in centuries. My wife and I visited the cathedral in 1969. The west towers were not even begun. I’ve not visited all that many cathedrals in my vagabond travels, but the only one I’ve ever seen that compares with it is St. Peter’s in Rome.

The second phase of the National Cathedral’s restoration is set to begin soon. So far, only 12 percent of the exterior repairs are complete, according to WTOP. Completed in June 2015, the first phase involved restoring the Nave ceiling and reinforcing six buttresses on the exterior east end. WAMU reported that repairs are not expected to complete for at least 10 more years.

The restoration began after the 5.8-magnitude earthquake on August 23, 2011 that caused $34 million worth of damage. The earthquake was the largest East Coast temblor in nearly 115 years, reported WTOP.

Constructed between 1907 and 1990, this huge neo-Gothic cathedral blends the spiritual with the profane in its architecture. Most of its richly colored stained-glass windows celebrate religious themes, although the ‘Scientists and Technicians’ window with its embedded lunar rock is an exception. The famed exterior gargoyles depict everything from Darth Vader to a Missouri bear. Specialty tours are available so check online for details. The excellent Open City cafe is in the cathedral’s grounds, occupying the historic baptistery building.

The Episcopal diocese runs this house of worship, but it’s open to all faiths. Presidents attend multi-faith services following their inauguration, state funerals are hosted inside and this was where Martin Luther King Jr gave his last Sunday sermon. Teddy Roosevelt witnessed the cornerstone being laid by workers in 1907 and construction stopped in 1990 when the west towers were completed, with George HW Bush looking on.

On our recent visit to Washington, D.C. we visited the Washington National Cathedral and attended the longest of their three Sunday services, the 11:15 a.m. service in the Nave described as “the finest in high Cathedral tradition with rich musical offerings from the Cathedral Choirs, prayer, scripture, a sermon and Holy Communion.” The service lasted about 75 minutes. It was a mother’s day service and I was impressed to see two woman canons participate in the service, including one who gave a nice talk about her mother. It was my first Episcopal service.
