I like Hotel Royal Ladakh because it is slightly out of town but still close enough so that you would not mind walking to and from the market. The views are just great – no obstructions at all – from Tsemo Fort on the left to Shanti Stupa on the right, with the Stok range right in front. You can just keep gazing at the mountains all day. The front-facing rooms offer the same vista.

Ladakh has a tendency to rouse a multitude of emotions, most of which are fervent, some of which are conflicting. There’s no doubt that you will at once be overwhelmed by the rugged high-altitude desert and snow-capped peaks that pierce the heavens. It’s actually an incredibly humbling experience to be completely surrounded by mountains at such great heights. Dusty Leh itself, however, is less awe-inspiring. A typical north Indian tourist haven, the town is filled with tattooed tourists put-putting on Royal Enfields, throngs of Israelis, and eateries serving at least six different types of cuisine.

In fact, at most restaurants, traditional Tibetan and Ladakhi fare is treated as an afterthought or a haphazard supplement to the main treats of pizzas and pancakes. But don’t be discouraged; two restaurants, Tenzin Dickey and Norlakh, have won the unwavering patronage of discerning travellers and locals alike for their home-style preparations and generous portions of hearty thenthuk, spicy chowmein and delicate momos (fried, steamed or dunked in ginger soup).
