Relief printing | Art techniques materials

Relief printing is a family of printing methods where a printing block, plate or matrix that has had ink applied to its surface, but not to any recessed areas, is brought into contact with paper. The areas of the printing plate with ink will leave ink on the paper, whereas the recessed areas of the printing plate will leave the paper ink-free. A printing press may not be needed, as the back of the paper can be rubbed or pressed by hand with a simple tool such as a brayer or roller,More info:wiki

This project was inspired by my holiday in Devon. Having been rock pooling, I thought it would be good to work on a printing project inspired by things that live in rock pools. After photographing some research material for the students to work from we set about drawing some sea creatures and seaweeds. I had a selection of shells and pictures of fish, crabs etc too that students could use as reference.

I created a digital print-out template that was the same size as the polystyrene tiles the students would be using to create their printing plate. The students sketched their ideas inside the square template print-out, being mindful that some small details could be difficult to transfer onto polystyrene. Keeping the design large with simple texture was the way to go.

Inspired by the London Original Print Fair, here’s how to scribble, scratch and carve your design into a piece of polystyrene to make a relief print like a pro!

  • In this activity you will carve your design into a piece of polystyrene, using a blunt pencil or any other tool you like. Once you’ve made a printing block, you can print with it over and over again, making multiple pieces of art. What is a relief print?

Relief printing is when you carve into a printing block that you then use to press onto paper and make a print. The lines or shapes you carve into the printing block will not have ink on them, so will not show up on your paper. Instead, the print will reveal the parts you don’t draw, because they come into contact with the ink. The print will be a mirror image of what you see on your printing block!

#6       My Relief Printing Lino Cut Process,More info:gerryknight

Linocut has always been my absolute favourite printmaking technique. I first attempted in year seven. At the time, I was of course consumed by the love of horses and all things “horsey “, so my first linocut image was running horses in a field.

What I loved above linocut was that it was so graphic and direct, and not at all fiddly like etching. It felt to me a natural complimentary practice to my style of painting.
