#10       Exclusive: How Bruce Springsteen Wrote and Recorded ‘Born In The U.S.A,More info:rollingstone

My new book, Bruce Springsteen: The Stories Behind the Songs, tells the tales behind every officially released studio recording of Bruce Springsteen’s career so far. In addition to my years of Springsteen reporting, including five interviews with the man himself, the book draws on over 60 hours of brand-new interviews with musicians, producers, and other collaborators from throughout his career (including Max Weinberg, Roy Bittan, Nils Lofgren, Soozie Tyrell, Tom Morello, David Sancious and many, many more). I’m proud to debut this exclusive excerpt here at Rolling Stone, where I’ve been on staff since 2004. Every song gets its own entry in the book; the one you’re about to read is for the title track of Springsteen’s 1984 album.

#5       Rewinding the Charts: In 1984, Bruce Springsteen Was ‘Dancing’ to His Biggest Hit,More info:billboard

Told by manager Jon Landau that his 1984 LP “Born in the U.S.A.” lacked a single, The Boss balked, then penned his biggest smash.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN WROTE 70 songs for what would become his seventh studio album, Born in the U.S.A. But as the track list came together, his manager Jon Landau felt the record was missing one key track: an obvious first single.

Springsteen, who was 34 at the time, was not happy to hear this. “I’ve written 70 songs,” he replied, according to Dave Marsh’s biography Glory Days: The Bruce Springsteen Story. “If you want another, you write it.”

#4       Bruce Springsteen Plans Intimate Broadway Residency,More info:rollingstone

Bruce Springsteen will reportedly stage an intimate Broadway residency this fall as the rocker will perform eight weeks of solo concerts at New York’s Walter Kerr Theatre.

“[Springsteen] wants to play a smaller house. He wants to try something more intimate, and he likes the idea of being on Broadway,” a source told the New York Post of Springsteen’s plans, which include five shows a week for eight weeks starting in November.

A representative for Springsteen did not respond to Rolling Stone‘s request for comment.

The Walter Kerr Theatre, which seats 975 people, has been unoccupied since the Broadway production of Amelie closed in May. Rather than let the venue sit empty, the Kerr’s owner Jujamcyn Theaters offered Springsteen the theater rent-free; Springsteen will receive ticket revenues while the Kerr Theatre will get the profits from alcohol sales. “He’ll keep the lights on in the building, and they’ll sell gazillions of dollars worth of booze,” the source added.
