Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien OBE (16 April 1939 – 2 March 1999), professionally known as Dusty Springfield, was an English pop singer and record producer whose career extended from the late 1950s to the 1990s. With her distinctive mezzo-soprano sound, she was a significant singer of blue-eyed soul, pop and dramatic ballads, with French chanson, country and jazz also in her repertoire. During her 1960s peak she ranked among the most successful British female performers on both sides of the Atlantic and her image – marked by a peroxide blonde bouffant/beehive hairstyle, heavy makeup (thick black eyeliner and eye shadow) and evening gowns, as well as stylised, gestural performances – made her an icon of the Swinging Sixties. A fixture of British television, she presented many episodes of the hip 1963–66 British TV music series Ready Steady Go! and, between 1966 and 69, hosted her own series on both the BBC and ITV. In 1966 Springfield topped a number of popularity polls including Melody Maker‘s Best International Vocalist, and was the first UK singer to top the New Musical Express readers’ poll for Female Singer. A tribute show, Dusty and the Shades of the 60s, is coming to the Swan Theatre in Worcester on Thursday March 7, from 7.30pm.

Dusty Springfield, the soul legend and Swinging Sixties icon who became one of the biggest British stars in the U.S., is getting the biopic treatment, with Gemma Arterton (Their Finest, The Escape) attached to star.
So Much Love, which is being introduced to buyers in Toronto by Rocket Science, reunites Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley’s multi-award winning U.K. banner Number 9 Films with Oscar-nominated screenwriter Phyllis Nagy for the third time following 2014’s critically acclaimed Carol and the Emmy-nominated HBO film Mrs. Harris in 2005. The film will mark the directorial debut of Nagy, who also wrote the screenplay.

“You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” singer Dusty Springfield will be played by Gemma Arterton in “So Much Love.” The film follows the British soul legend’s journey to Memphis to record her career-defining album, “Dusty in Memphis.” Phyllis Nagy, Oscar-nominated for “Carol,” has written the screenplay and will direct.
Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley’s Number 9 Films will produce. Set in 1968, it follows Springfield as she navigates her way through the politics of both the recording studio and Memphis, experiences that went on to shape her politics, musical influences, and relationship with the music business.
“So Much Love” will be Nagy’s feature directorial debut. The project reunites her with Karlsen and Woolley after they worked together on 2015’s “Carol” and 2005’s “Mrs. Harris.” Arterton is also a regular collaborator with Number 9, having starred in “Their Finest” and “Byzantium.”

Gemma Arterton is to play Dusty Springfield in a new biopic about the legendary singer called So Much Love.
Phyllis Nagy, nominated for an Oscar in 2016 for her screenplay for Carol, will direct the film and write the script.
The film will be set in 1968 when Springfield travelled to Tennessee to record the album Dusty in Memphis.
Although it sold poorly when it was first released in 1969, the album has since been acclaimed as Springfield’s best.
