Aretha Louise Franklin (March 25, 1942 – August 16, 2018) was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and civil rights activist.Franklin began her career as a child singing gospel at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, where her father C. L. Franklin was minister. At the age of 18, she embarked on a secular musical career as a recording artist for Columbia Records. While Franklin’s career did not immediately flourish, she found acclaim and commercial success after signing with Atlantic Records in 1966. (CNN)The family of Aretha Franklin is headed to court over three wills purportedly handwritten by the late singer.

The so-called “holographic wills” were discovered earlier this month by Sabrina Owens, the personal representative of the Aretha Franklin Estate. They contained within them what the estate called “potential areas of protest.”

Attorneys for Franklin’s four sons were unable to resolve the issue and are therefore headed to court to determine if the wills are admissible to probate.

Two of Franklin’s sons are opposing the admission of the wills. The documents are dated June 21, 2010; October 20, 2010 and March 31, 2014, according to a court filing regarding the matter.

CNN has reviewed the documents. The will dated June 2010 makes reference to Franklin’s high blood pressure and a mass on her pancreas.

Aretha Franklin, a singer who changed the face of rock and roll, soul and R&B with such classics as “Think” and her signature song “Respect,” died Thursday at her home in Detroit.

She was 76 and had pancreatic cancer, according to her representative Gwendolyn Quinn.

Ms. Franklin died at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, according to her family, who said in a written statement: “We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on.”

Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.

Ms. Franklin had been battling cancer for several years. Health issues forced her to retire last year from regular touring and at times to cancel concerts.
