The Victoria Falls Bridge crosses the Zambezi River near the Victory Falls and was built over the second gorge downstream of the falls.

The Zambezi River is the borderline between Zambia and Zimbabwe, so the bridge connects the two countries and the cities of Livingstone in Zambia and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and at the two ends there are their respective border posts; nowadays it is the only railway bridge that joins the two countries, while it is one of the three bridges accessible by car.

The bridge measures 198 meters in total, it has a single 156.5-meter parabolic arch without supporting piles and it is located at a height of 128 meters.

The Victoria Falls Bridge is the result of Cecil Rhodes’ intelligence and was part of its colossal, and never fully realized, project of linking by railroad, Cape Town, in today’s South Africa, to Cairo in Egypt.

A hundred-year journey

Join us for a voyage on Victoria Falls Bridge, a journey that goes back a hundred years to the time when Cecil John Rhodes laid out his plans for a Cape to Cairo Railway.

On this tour, travellers will discover how the bridge was constructed and how a full locomotive was transported across the gorge before the actual completion of the bridge. Our highly knowledgable and experienced guides will ensure a safe and informative two hours on and around the bridge.

Stop to peer over the edge at the incredible valley below, so-called no man’s land, where Zambia and Zimbabwe meet. It is from here that the brave launch themselves into the depths below during a bunjee-jumping experience.

#6       Cape to Cairo railway and the Victoria Falls Bridge,More info:ice.org

The Cape to Cairo railway is an uncompleted railway crossing Africa from south to north.

First proposed by Daily Telegraph editor Edwin Arnold in 1874, the idea was taken up by British entrepreneur Cecil Rhodes.

Rhodes was a businessman, mining magnate and politician. He remains a controversial figure, criticised for his imperialist views and belief in white supremacism.

The rail link aimed to connect areas of Africa between Cape Town in South Africa and Cairo in Egypt that were controlled at the time by the British Empire.

The line was never completed – there is no section between Sudan and Uganda.
