The Phi Phi Islands  are an island group in Thailand, between the large island of Phuket and the Straits of Malacca coast of Thailand. The islands are administratively part of Krabi Province. Ko Phi Phi Don  is the largest and most populated island of the group, although the beaches of the second largest island, Ko Phi Phi Le are visited by many people as well. The rest of the islands in the group, including Bida Nok, Bida Nai, and Bamboo Island , are not much more than large limestone rocks jutting out of the sea. BANGKOK — Some of Southeast Asia’s world-class beach resorts are beginning to deal with the environmental problems that tourists leave behind every day.

Thailand’s Maya Bay and the Philippines’ Boracay Island, in fact, are preparing temporary “keep out” signs.

Starting this year, Maya Bay on Thailand’s Phi Phi Island in the Andaman Sea will be closed from June to September, according to a plan that was approved on Wednesday during a meeting of officials of the Had Nopparat Thara-Phi Phi Island National Park. The central government is expected to officially announce the annual closure by May.

Excessive tourism has been a pressing issue at the beach, especially since Leonardo DiCaprio made it famous in the 2000 Hollywood film “The Beach.” Nearly 1.9 million tourists visited the beach in the fiscal year through this past September, up 12.5% on the year and a nearly sixfold increase from two years earlier.

Koh Phi Phi (pronounced Pee Pee) is located about 45km East of Phuket and offers some excellent dive sites for all levels of diver. In 1996, Alex Garland, wrote a novel about a young English backpacker named Richard, who ditches his familiar life to travel in search of something new. He lands in Thailand, where he meets a mentally disturbed guy who gives him a hand-drawn map. It contains directions to a mysterious island with a paradise-like beach, untouched by tourists. Lured by the idea to find Eden on Earth, together with a couple of travelers, he sets off on a journey only to witness the collapse of a utopian life. A collapse that comes after colonizing a paradise. The novel is The Beach, later adapted into a movie, staring Leonardo DiCaprio. And the mystical island? No other but Ko Phi Phi Leh, the smaller of the two Phi Phi islands.

Fast forward 21 years later, I met Terry and Jamie on my very first night on Koh Lanta. Both traveling alone, they had met in Bangkok and decided to continue together. They were coming to Ko Lanta from the Ko Phi Phi islands for “a body detox”. No sleep, non-stop party, cocktails in buckets, bars with all-you-can-drink offers, packed out beaches, easy hook-ups, drugs. That was the island experience. On top of that, Jamie had gotten a nice souvenir in a bar too – a cutout of a penis on his chest hair. Even for party veterans like them, Ko Phi Phi islands offered too much.

Koh Phi Phi is one of the most well-known and popular islands in all of Thailand. It’s where The Beach was filmed – you know, that film with Leonardo DiCaprio? I assumed that this would mean it would be an incredible destination, full of beautiful beaches and fun things to do. I’d seen Instagram photos of Koh Phi Phi captioned “I love Koh Phi Phi!” and “Koh Phi Phi is so beautiful.” It sounded like a lively, paradise island.

However, while travelling through Thailand, I heard many people call Koh Phi Phi a trashed party island. People were even referring to it as “The Magaluf of Southeast Asia.” There’s a lot of backpacker snobbery in Southeast Asia, where people will sneer at anything slightly Westernised, so I, perhaps naively, took all the negatives with a pinch of salt.
