The Mughals were at the peak of their power and wealth during Shah Jahan’s reign, and India’s rich lode of precious gems yielded him much wealth and power. But he was powerless to stop Mumtaz Mahal’s death during childbirth in 1631. Legend has it that she bound him with a deathbed promise to build her the most beautiful tomb ever known.

The attraction in Agra, which was built in the 17th century, is admired by travelers and locals alike each year thanks to its mesmerizing architectural beauty that incorporates arches, domes, and marble features.
The Taj Mahal attracts an estimated 8 million visitors a year, a large majority of them being Indian citizens.
Though the mausoleum is renowned for its construction, years of visitation and decay have led to concerns regarding preservation, with experts pointing to its marble showing cracks and its wooden foundation eroding as far back as 2010.
