Cockroaches

Cockroaches are insects of the order Blattodea, which also includes termites. About 30 cockroach species out of 4,600 are associated with human habitats. About four species are well known as pests, more info:wiki

Are you bugged by roaches? Cockroaches are one of the most common household pests. They can squeeze into the tiniest cracks and crevices, wherever food water and shelter is present. Once they move into a home, they multiply quickly making them harder to control.

Cockroaches are capable of contaminating food and surfaces and can contribute to asthma conditions with their droppings, body parts, and secretions.

While insecticides and pesticides are often used to control them, these chemicals can harm people too. Integrated pest management (IPM) methods usually pose less of a risk and are more effective.

Below you will find more information on the different types of cockroaches, ways to prevent and control infestations, and other helpful resources.

Biology

Cockroaches seek to hide in dark narrow cracks and crevices and are most active at night. They tend to gather in corners (in the back of cabinets or drawers, for example) and generally travel along edges such as baseboards. They may be carried into homes in boxes, egg cartons, beverage cases and produce such as potatoes. In apartments and other large buildings, they readily migrate from one place to another along water pipes.

A roach can find a snack just about anywhere. They eat crumbs, pet food, dead leaves, and trash. If they get really hungry, they might eat glue or soap.

The genome of the American cockroach has been sequenced for the first time, revealing why these creepy-crawlies are such tenacious survivors.

The roach (Periplaneta americana) has widely expanded gene families related to taste and smell, to detoxification and to immunity, compared with other insects, according to a new study published March 20 in the journal Nature Communications.

“It makes total sense in the context of the lifestyle,” said Coby Schal, an entomologist at North Carolina State University who was part of a team that last month reported an analysis of the genome of the German cockroach (Blattella germanica). Many of the gene families that expanded in the American cockroach were also expanded in the German cockroach, Schal said. That makes sense because both species are omnivorous scavengers that can thrive on rotting food in seriously unsanitary environments.

#6       COCKROACHES: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY,more info:westernext

Upon hearing the word “cockroach,” most people involuntarily grimace or shudder. These bugs don’t have a good reputation, and they’re usually towards the top of people’s “Most Disgusting Pests” lists. But are cockroaches all that bad? Let’s take a look.

THE GOOD

The truth is that the environment needs these little guys; more specifically, cockroaches (also known as water bugs) help play a large role in the ecosystem’s nitrogen cycle, where nitrogen moves from bacteria, animals, and plants to the ground and the air. Professor Srini Kambhampati from the University of Texas at Tyler tells us why:

“Most cockroaches feed on decaying organic matter, which traps a lot of nitrogen. Cockroach feeding has the effect of releasing that nitrogen (in their feces) which then gets into the soil and is used by plants. In other words, extinction of cockroaches would have a big impact on forest health and therefore indirectly on all the species that live there.”

Last week a vegan restauranteur in Canberra, Australia, said he had refused to kill the cockroaches infesting his kitchen because doing so would have involved “killing little insects” and violating his beliefs. He violated the food safety code instead, and wound up being fined about $12,000.

Kingsland Vegetarian Restaurant owner Khanh Hoang went to court on Thursday over eight health code violations uncovered in a 2013 raid. Live and dead roaches had been spotted in the kitchen, but there were plenty of other problems. “Parts of the walls and floors had not been cleaned for a considerable period and had a thick accumulation of grease, dirt, and other material,” reported the Brisbane Times. “Surfaces and equipment—such as stove top and dirty pots, pans and trays—had been left uncleansed, and covered in dirt, food waste and debris.”
